When assessing college greatness, it is important to turn a blind eye to the player's outcome as a professional. Corey Davis assembled one of the preeminent college careers with three consecutive 1,400-yard campaigns, which propelled him to the fifth-overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. It is stunning that a receiver from a Group of 5 program (Western Michigan) ascended so high on NFL teams’ draft boards.
While the Broncos’ playmaker did not garner a first-place vote, Davis collected four second-place ones and a third-place vote to finish second among receivers, earning a roster spot in the inaugural class of the College Fantasy Football Hall of Fame. In FBS history, Davis finished his college career as the all-time leading receiver with 5,285 yards and was the only player with 300 catches, 5,000 yards and 50-plus touchdowns. He is second all-time with 52 career receiving touchdowns.
In 2016, Davis was named the Biletnikoff Award winner and Consensus All-American after posting career highs with 97 catches for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. The senior was instrumental in Western Michigan's 13-1 record, and an invite to the 2017 Cotton Bowl, which is the team's only New Year's Day Bowl berth. He also earned First Team All-MAC and Offensive Player of the Year in the Conference.
As a junior, the Broncos’ playmaker collected First Team All-MAC, catching 90 passes for 1,436 yards and 12 scores. He closed the crusade with seven consecutive 100-yard games and logged nine for the year. In the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl against Middle Tennessee, he recorded eight catches for 183 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown.
As a sophomore in 2014, Davis exploded onto the national scene with 1,408 receiving yards on 78 catches and reached the end zone 15 times. In the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, he totaled eight receptions for 176 yards and three touchdowns, grossing the team's MVP honors. After compiling an historical three-year run, Davis is a worthy member of the CFF Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
Corey Davis discussed his influences in November 2016: “Like I said, I watched a lot of Randy Moss. As of late, it's been a lot of Brandon Marshall. He's one of my favorite receivers. I like the way he plays, I like his competitive edge. He's physical and when he goes up and gets the ball, that's someone I model my game after.” (si.com)
